Stay Safe This Summer: Essential Tips from Boundless
June is National Safety Month, making it the perfect time to focus on simple, practical ways to stay safe while enjoying everything summer has to offer. Summer brings sunshine, outdoor activities, and opportunities to connect, but it also comes with seasonal risks that require attention and preparation.
At Boundless, we are committed to supporting safe, healthy experiences for everyone. Here are some important summer safety tips to keep in mind.
Beat the Heat: Prevent Dehydration
Dehydration occurs when the body loses fluids and electrolytes faster than they are replaced—often due to sweating and inadequate water intake. Be mindful that beverages like alcohol, coffee, tea, and soda can contribute to dehydration.
Watch for signs such as:
- Headache, nausea, or vomiting
- Fainting or dizziness
- Confusion or blurred vision
- Dark or reduced urine output
- Dry mouth or skin
- Fever (over 102°F)
Stay safe by:
- Drinking at least eight glasses of water daily
- Increasing water intake during outdoor activities
- Taking breaks in cool or shaded areas
Heat stroke (also called sunstroke) is a serious, life-threatening condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. If heat stroke is suspected, seek medical attention immediately.
Protect Your Skin from the Sun
Sunburn can happen to anyone, regardless of skin tone, and risk increases with prolonged exposure or certain medications.
Protect yourself by:
- Avoiding direct sun between 10 AM and 4 PM
- Applying sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) 30 minutes before going outside
- Reapplying sunscreen every 2–3 hours or after swimming
- Wearing hats, sunglasses with 100% UV protection, and protective clothing
- Using lip balm with SPF
- Staying in the shade when possible
Sunburns can occur even on cloudy days.
Never Leave Anyone in a Hot Car
Leaving someone in a parked vehicle—even briefly—can quickly become dangerous.
People at higher risk include:
- Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
- Children and infants
- Older adults
- People with chronic medical conditions
Vehicles heat up rapidly, and cracking a window does not prevent heat-related illness.
Important reminder:
Never leave anyone unattended in a car, regardless of the situation or length of time.
Practice Water Safety
Drowning is a serious risk and can happen quickly and quietly. It is especially important to understand each person’s abilities around water.
Safety tips include:
- Identify and secure water hazards (pools, bathtubs, lakes, etc.)
- Install and maintain safeguards such as locks, fences, covers, and alarms
- Communicate risks with caregivers, family members, and support staff
- Encourage swimming lessons and water safety education
- Ensure supervision by someone trained in CPR and first aid
- Use life jackets or flotation devices when appropriate
Always watch for signs of fatigue, overheating, or distress in and around water.
Plan Ahead for Festivals and Fairs
Summer events are enjoyable but require preparation to ensure safety and comfort.
Helpful tips:
- Ensure adequate supervision and staffing
- Bring essentials such as water, sunscreen, extra clothing, and necessary supplies
- Keep groups together and establish a meeting point
- Make sure individuals carry identification
- Plan for meals, snacks, and dietary needs
- Confirm accessible restroom accommodations
Preparation helps create a safe and positive experience for everyone.
Trampoline Safety
Trampolines can be fun but also pose risks if not used properly.
Best practices:
- Allow only one person to jump at a time
- Provide consistent supervision
- Ensure protective padding is in place, in good condition, and properly positioned
Prevent Food Poisoning
Food safety is especially important during summer gatherings and outdoor meals.
Follow four simple steps:
- Clean – Wash hands and surfaces frequently
- Separate – Avoid cross-contamination between foods
- Cook – Prepare food to safe temperatures
- Chill – Refrigerate food promptly
