Using Technology to Increase Independence
The Boundless SmartHome is one of the latest developments as part of the Boundless’ Remote Support Services initiative, which brings innovative technology and services into living spaces designed for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
Located at Boundless’ Kimberly Woods property in Central Ohio, the Boundless SmartHome is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that offers better quality of life for the folks who need them.
These technologies give individuals a chance to have greater independence while maintaining the support they need to live comfortably. Along with smart devices and appliances, the Boundless SmartHome also features a remote approach to providing support, with off-site monitoring from staff at Boundless to aid if trouble arises.
Privacy is an important aspect of the Boundless SmartHome, and monitoring extends beyond the use of audio and video; remote support also includes motion sensors, door alerts, temperature and water detectors, and pressure sensors, for example. Utilizing a variety of devices ensures the utmost safety of the individual while maintaining a private and independent lifestyle.
Another benefit of the Boundless SmartHome is its flexibility. Each technology caters to an individual's specific needs and wants, and a central hub controls every technology throughout the house and allows the maximum freedom of living throughout the space.
Assistive technologies in the Boundless SmartHome include:
- NextGenAT Remote Support Services hub, camera, and motion sensors
- Liftware steadying device for silverware
- Samsung Smart Refrigerator
- Samsung Smart TV
- Samsung Smart Range with iGuardStove automated safety shutoff

- Whirlpool Smart Microwave, compatible with Amazon Alexa with barcode scan for easy cooking

The SmartHome has two floors. The first floor has a living room, kitchen, private bedroom, and bathroom for individuals with disabilities. The upstairs area is intended for guardians and has a bedroom and a bathroom.
In late October, families will be able to make reservations to tour the SmartHome and get a hand-on demonstration of Remote Support Services and various assistive technologies to determine which technologies work best for their loved one. In the future, Boundless’ goal is to offer the SmartHome as an overnight option for families interested in trying out the technologies for a longer duration.
