Turning Down the Volume

Why Sensory-Friendly Spaces Matter

For many people, a quick shopping trip is just another task on the to-do list. For individuals with sensory sensitivities, the experience can be overwhelming.

Bright lighting, loud music, crowded aisles, and constant visual stimulation can turn a routine errand into an exhausting challenge. These sensory barriers are common for many autistic individuals, people with ADHD, PTSD, anxiety disorders, migraines, and other conditions that affect sensory processing.

Recognizing this need, major retailers are increasingly introducing sensory-friendly initiatives. Most recently, Sephora announced the global expansion of its "Quiet Hours" program following a successful pilot in stores across multiple markets. During designated times, stores reduce sensory input by lowering music, dimming digital screens, and minimizing other distractions.

The program was developed in collaboration with neurodiversity advocacy organizations, reflecting a growing understanding that accessibility isn't limited to ramps, elevators, and physical accommodations. True inclusion also means creating environments where people can comfortably engage, participate, and belong.

Sephora isn't alone in this effort. Over the past several years, organizations across industries have adopted sensory-friendly practices to make their spaces more accessible. Walmart established sensory-friendly shopping hours in stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. AMC Theatres offers Sensory Friendly Film screenings that provide a more comfortable movie-going experience for individuals with sensory sensitivities. Other brands, including Target and Chuck E. Cheese, have also introduced accommodations designed to reduce overstimulation and support diverse customer needs.

Accessibility is increasingly being viewed as a fundamental part of customer experience rather than an optional add-on.

Why Sensory Accessibility Matters

Sensory inclusion benefits far more people than many realize. While these accommodations are often associated with autism, sensory-friendly environments can support individuals with a wide range of experiences and needs. Reduced noise levels, less visual stimulation, and predictable environments can help people manage anxiety, sensory processing differences, migraine disorders, post-traumatic stress, and other conditions that may not always be visible.

Importantly, creating sensory-friendly spaces doesn't require businesses to completely redesign their environments. Small changes that can have a significant impact include:

  • Lowering background music
  • Reducing unnecessary announcements
  • Dimming bright displays during designated hours
  • Providing quiet spaces or sensory-friendly areas
  • Communicating accommodations clearly to visitors

These adjustments can help individuals feel more confident, comfortable, and included when participating in everyday activities.

Inclusion in Action

At Boundless, we believe accessibility and inclusion are strongest when they're built into experiences from the start. Sensory-friendly initiatives remind us that belonging isn't only about physical access. It's also about creating environments where people feel welcome, respected, and able to engage in ways that work for them.

As more businesses explore sensory-inclusive practices, they're helping to remove barriers that have often gone unnoticed. In doing so, they're creating spaces that work better for everyone.

Inclusion isn't always about adding something new. Sometimes, it's as simple as turning down the volume and making room for everyone to participate.
