Celebrating National Dog Biscuit Day

After celebrating Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day, there’s still one more important date to mark on your calendar—National Dog Biscuit Day!

This February holiday is all about treating our four-legged companions to something special. Whether you have a playful pup or a wise old dog, it’s the perfect time to spoil them with their favorite tasty snacks—and Boundless can help.

Dog biscuits have been around for centuries, originally crafted as a nutritious, long-lasting snack for working dogs. Over time, they’ve become a beloved reward for dogs of all breeds and sizes. From simple baked biscuits to gourmet creations and even treats made from spent grains from breweries, there’s something for every pup’s taste. And at Boundless’ Pets & People Bakery, every biscuit does more than just make tails wag—it helps teach valuable vocational skills to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

For over 15 years, Pets & People has been whipping up delicious, all-natural dog treats in flavors like cheese, chicken, and beef. But it’s more than just baking—individuals with I/DD mix, shape, bake, package, and even sell the treats, gaining hands-on experience in real-world work.

“Some of the skills they learn include teamwork, meeting deadlines, customer service skills, employer expectations, problem-solving skills, salesmanship, time management, and research,” explains Melissa Engle, manager of workforce and community services at Boundless. “The program helps prepare individuals for community employment while providing them with, for some, their first opportunity to earn discretionary funds for themselves.”

And just like any great bakery, Pets & People is always innovating. Last year, participants had the chance to develop an exciting new product—Pets & People Bacon-Flavored Bottle Caps. Made from spent grains donated by Cincinnati-based Rhinegeist Brewery (zero alcohol, of course!), these treats quickly became a customer favorite.

“With the donation of Rhinegeist spent grains, individuals and staff worked hard to research and develop this new recipe with much trial and error,” Engle shares. “They have now come up with a recipe that delights our customers and their furry friends. This is our most popular product, cleverly named Pets & People Bottle Caps.”

Beyond treats, National Dog Biscuit Day is a great time to celebrate the love and joy that dogs bring into our lives. Whether you’re picking up a bag of treats for your own pup or donating to a local shelter, a simple gesture can make a big difference.

No matter how you celebrate, your dog will appreciate the extra love (and snacks!). So grab a handful of Pets & People treats and give your good boy or girl a tail-wagging surprise today!
