Looking Beyond the Numbers

World Population Day is July 11!
When we hear the word population, it's easy to think about statistics, charts, and big global numbers. But population is really about people; our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members. It's about the unique individuals that make our communities what they are.
This World Population Day, we're taking a moment to celebrate a core belief at Boundless: every person matters, and every person deserves to belong.
For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), belonging goes beyond being included in a count or represented in a report. It means having opportunities to learn, work, build relationships, contribute to the community, and make choices about their own lives.
Every day, people with I/DD bring creativity, kindness, determination, and unique perspectives to the world around them. They are employees, volunteers, artists, advocates, students, teammates, and leaders. They enrich our communities in countless ways, often challenging us to think differently about what inclusion, independence, and success truly mean.
As our communities grow and change, it's important to ask ourselves a simple question: Are we creating spaces where everyone can participate and thrive?
That means ensuring that housing, employment opportunities, healthcare, transportation, recreation, and community programs are accessible and welcoming to all people. It means recognizing that true inclusion isn't just about opening the door, it's about making sure everyone has the support and opportunity to walk through it. The progress we've seen toward inclusion didn't happen by accident. This month also marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law that helped protect the rights of people with disabilities and expand access to education, employment, transportation, and community life. While the ADA has helped move our society forward, continued advocacy remains essential to ensuring people with I/DD can fully participate in their communities and pursue the futures they envision for themselves.
World Population Day is also a reminder that everyone has hopes for the future. People with I/DD have dreams, goals, and aspirations just like anyone else. Whether that means finding meaningful employment, living more independently, pursuing an education, making new friends, or giving back to their community, those goals deserve to be supported and celebrated.
At Boundless, advocacy is one of the ways we help make that vision a reality. Through Boundless Advocates, our grassroots advocacy group, staff, families, individuals served, and community stakeholders work together to ensure the voices of people with I/DD are heard by elected officials. By sharing personal stories, providing testimony, participating in letter-writing and postcard campaigns, engaging on social media, and communicating directly with policymakers, advocates help shape decisions that impact access to services, funding, and opportunities. Advocacy is about more than policy, it's about making sure every person is recognized, valued, and included in the decisions that affect their lives.
The strength of any community isn't measured by its size. It's measured by how well it values the people who call it home.
This World Population Day, let's look beyond the numbers and focus on the people behind them. Let's celebrate the contributions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and continue working toward communities where everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and included.
Because at the end of the day, every number is a person. Every person has a story. And every story deserves to matter.
