Celebrating National Emoji Day: More Than Just a Smile
Every year on National Emoji Day (July 17), people around the world celebrate the tiny symbols that have become part of our everyday conversations. Whether it's a ❤️ to show love, a 🎉 to celebrate a milestone, or a 👍 to say "I understand," emojis help us express feelings, ideas, and connections in a simple, visual way.
For many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), visual communication is more than a convenience—it's an important tool for expressing themselves.
Not everyone communicates through spoken words. Some people use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, communication boards, picture symbols, gestures, or other visual supports to share their thoughts, feelings, and needs.
While emojis aren't a replacement for AAC systems or individualized communication supports, they can complement communication by providing familiar, recognizable symbols that help convey emotions, preferences, or reactions. They also create opportunities for connection in text messages, social media, and digital conversations, allowing people of all communication styles to participate in today's increasingly visual world.
A simple 😊 can communicate happiness. A 😴 might let someone know they're tired. A 🍕 can help express a favorite food. These small images can make communication more engaging, accessible, and inclusive.
One of the best things about emojis is that they're nearly universal. They help bridge communication differences and encourage people to think beyond words alone.
When we embrace multiple ways of communicating (whether through speech, sign language, AAC, pictures, or emojis) we create spaces where more people can be understood and included.
At Boundless, we believe every person deserves the opportunity to communicate in the way that works best for them. Supporting communication means supporting independence, self-advocacy, relationships, and community participation.
To celebrate National Emoji Day, the talented bakers at Confection Connection got creative in the kitchen by decorating delicious emoji cookies inspired by some of everyone's favorite expressions.
These cheerful treats are a fun reminder that something as simple as a smiley face can brighten someone's day - and that communication comes in many forms.
Whether you're celebrating with cookies, sending your favorite emoji to a friend, or learning more about different ways people communicate, National Emoji Day is a great opportunity to celebrate connection, inclusion, and the many ways we express ourselves.
Happy National Emoji Day from all of us at Boundless!
